The Rapper Who Refused to Disappear

In an industry that buries artists the moment controversy touches their name, Tory Lanez keeps releasing music. Not quietly. Not apologetically. Just relentlessly — from behind the walls of a California prison, with a 10-year sentence on the clock and the entire entertainment industry watching to see if he’ll fold.

He hasn’t. And on July 17, 2026, he made that clearer than ever.

MADE YOU THINK I WAS GONE…BUT: The Double Album From Inside

On July 14, Tory Lanez announced a surprise double album titled MADE YOU THINK I WAS GONE…BUT, scheduled to arrive July 17. The title alone is a statement — addressed to an industry that might have written him off, to fans who wondered if he’d ever resurface, and arguably to the people who put him behind bars in the first place.

The project divides into two distinct halves: Fargo’s Revenge, the rap disc containing 12 tracks, and Fargo’s Heartbreak, the R&B collection featuring 11 songs — reflecting the dual musical personalities that have defined his entire career. It’s a completely solo effort. No features. Just Tory, in both modes, saying everything he’s been holding.

Song titles include references to NBA stars Jalen Brunson and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, suggesting Lanez has been paying attention to the outside world even while cut off from it. The album artwork appears to reference the brutal prison attack Lanez says he survived last year — showing a man with his face wrapped in cloth. As previously reported, Lanez claimed he was stabbed 16 times by another inmate in May 2025, leaving him with permanent facial scarring and two collapsed lungs.

The album title isn’t just bravado. It’s documentation.

Recording Behind Bars: The Prison Catalog Nobody Predicted

MADE YOU THINK I WAS GONE…BUT is not Lanez’s first act of artistic defiance from prison. He previously released a Prison Tapes series — until correctional officers confiscated the recording equipment from his cell and put the series on hold. He didn’t stop. He adapted.

In March 2025, he released Peterson, his eighth studio album, recorded in the weeks before its release through his own One Umbrella Records label — featuring family members including his son Kai’Lon, his father Sonstar, and his siblings. The record was an intensely personal document of a man reaching for the people closest to him while physically separated from all of them.

Since beginning his sentence, Lanez has released Prison Tapes, Peterson, LOL: Slutty Bass, and now MADE YOU THINK I WAS GONE…BUT — making him one of hip-hop’s most prolific prison-era artists. The comparison to Mac Dre and 03 Greedo is real: artists who turned incarceration into a creative pressure cooker and came out the other side with catalogs that proved the industry’s gatekeeping meant nothing.

What makes Lanez’s output even more remarkable is the independence behind it. One Umbrella Records is his label, his infrastructure, his decision-making. There is no A&R second-guessing the rollout. No label politics about timing or optics. He records it, he announces it, it drops. That level of control — rare for any artist, almost unheard of for one serving a decade behind bars — is its own kind of power move.

The Case That Changed Everything: Megan Thee Stallion

None of this context exists without the night of July 12, 2020. After a party in the Hollywood Hills, Megan Thee Stallion was shot in both feet. Tory Lanez was arrested at the scene.

After a protracted legal battle that gripped the hip-hop community and sparked broader conversations about Black women, belief, and accountability, Lanez was convicted in December 2022 on three felony counts: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and negligently discharging a firearm. He is currently serving a 10-year California prison sentence. He has maintained his innocence and continues to appeal the case.

The trial polarized the music industry in ways that are still being processed. Supporters argued the conviction was mishandled. Critics pointed to the documented pattern of disbelief that Black women face when reporting violence. Megan herself became both a survivor advocate and a target — receiving threats that followed her long after the verdict.

Where Lanez’s legacy ultimately lands depends, in large part, on how his appeal plays out. But what isn’t in dispute is that the case fundamentally changed both of their careers — and forced the industry to have conversations it had been quietly avoiding for years.

Two Boys From Toronto: The Drake Connection

To understand Tory Lanez, you have to understand that he came of age in the shadow of the biggest rapper alive — and from the same city.

Lanez has long described himself as “the second artist from Toronto to get signed to a U.S. deal after Drake — before The Weeknd, before PARTYNEXTDOOR, before all of them.” He saw himself as the only person from the city who could, like Drake, both rap lyrically and sing with genuine conviction. That proximity to greatness was never comfortable for either of them.

Their early relationship was defined by subliminal shots and competitive energy. The feud traces back to 2015, when Lanez publicly called out Drake for referring to their hometown simply as “the 6” rather than its area code, 416. It was petty by design — but it was also Tory staking a territorial claim in a city that Drake had already claimed as his own.

The tension finally ended through a phone call brokered by mutual friends, which led to a peace summit photo posted to Instagram in May 2017. Within months, Drake brought Lanez out on stage at OVO Fest in Toronto. “This guy right here, we had problems with each other and we hadn’t even met,” Drake told the crowd. “I met the man and he’s a great guy.” They performed Lanez’s version of “Controlla” together, and the city cheered.

The friendship that followed never became a full creative collaboration — no official joint record ever materialized — but the mutual respect was real and visible. During the Megan Thee Stallion case, Drake appeared to defend Lanez on the track “Circo Loco,” which drew a direct response from Megan on social media. The Toronto bond, even frayed by controversy, had its own gravitational pull.

What Comes Next

Tory Lanez at 33 is either an artist in the middle of his comeback story or a cautionary tale, depending entirely on who you ask. His appeal continues. His music keeps coming. His independence keeps him in control of the one thing he can still control.

MADE YOU THINK I WAS GONE…BUT lands as a reminder that the music industry’s power to silence someone only works if that person stops making noise. Tory Lanez, for better or worse, is still making noise.

The Bronx has two area codes. Toronto has 416. And from a prison cell in California, Fargo is still rapping.
